The Upward Driving Program is a training program designed to give employees the opportunity to receive the necessary training  skills and opportunity for promotion into a Certified Motor Vehicle Operator- Delivery Specialist position.  Once selected for the program, employees will go out on a few runs with a driver as a helper early on in the training to get a feel for the duties and requirements of the job and to see if they are comfortable in continuing this program. The employee cannot move forward in the program until the permit is obtained.


Topics to be trained on are:

  1. General knowledge and Safe operation of equipment
  2. Safety inspections and hazard identification
  3. Safe backing / driving and dock procedures 
  4. Duties and documentation relative to yard specialist
  5. Preparation for the NYS, CDL Written exam
  6. DOT regulations
  7. Hours of service
  8. Teltrek Garmin Electronic logs
  9. Complete Driver orientation and safety training

Once the training period is completed (time period may vary per employee), the employee will have a progress report completed by the Driver Safety Specialist. If he feels that the employee is ready to move forward, the employee will have 30 days to get their CDLA. (the cost for the permit and license will be the employees responsibility and not paid for by the company)


Starting rate of pay is $20.00/hour and progess as you move through the program


  • Safe and efficient operation of tractor trailer in rural and urban environments.
  • Understanding and compliance with legal regulations and traffic control devices
  • Safety procedures and practices for handling products and PIT equipment
  • GPS System and atlas use, trip planning and time management. 
  • Understanding and completion of all related paperwork, such as trip reports, Return Books, etc.
  • Customer service skills
  • Complete Preparation for Taking the NYS CDLA Road Test.
  • Complete a “minimum” of 200 hours of logged driving time with a Certified G&C Foods Driver trainer.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform all duties in a safe and proficient manner
  • Meet all required State and federal standards
  • Complete a G&C Drivers general knowledge exam and a required company road test.
  • A Certified Driver Trainer and the trainee must all agree on and sign documentation of satisfactory completion of all training.


  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Must be employed with G&C Foods at least 6 months
  • Must be in good standings with the company within the past 6 months
  • Must meet DOT Physical and drug testing standards
  • Does not require a CDL permit initially
